Casares Costa: what to know before you stay

Where the apartment actually is — the quiet coastal strip between Estepona and Sotogrande, in our own words.

Last updated:

Casares Costa is the part of Casares that sits on the Mediterranean — a low-rise, residential stretch of coast between Estepona to the east and Sotogrande to the west. It's where La Sabina Homes is.

If you're picturing the busy, nightlife-driven Costa del Sol, this isn't quite that. It's calmer, more residential, and a lot of the people who come back year after year come precisely because of that. You're still 15–20 minutes from Estepona's old town, half an hour from Marbella, and about 30 minutes from Gibraltar airport.

Where it sits, and what the area is honestly like

Geographically, you're roughly halfway between Estepona and Sotogrande, right on the coast, with the Sierra Bermeja rising behind. The road through the area is the A-7 / N-340; everything you actually need day-to-day is along a fairly short stretch of it.

Character-wise, expect quiet apartment complexes, well-kept walking and cycling paths along the seafront, several golf courses, a couple of beach restaurants, and a few small commercial pockets with supermarkets, pharmacies and casual restaurants. There isn't a 'town centre' as such — the centres of gravity are nearby Estepona, Sotogrande and (for a day trip) Marbella.

Beaches

The coast here is a series of long, mostly sandy beaches separated by small rocky points. From the apartment you can walk to the beach in a few minutes. The most-named beaches in the immediate area are Playa Ancha, Playa de la Sal and Playa de la Perla de la Bahía / Bahía de Casares.

Practical notes: the sand is soft and the water is usually calm — good for families and for swimming. There are public showers and a paved seafront promenade. In high season (July–August) you'll find a couple of beach restaurants (chiringuitos) open. Out of season it's very quiet, and several of them close.

Golf

This is one of the main reasons guests choose the area. Within a 10–20 minute drive you have a cluster of well-known courses, including Finca Cortesín (host of major international events), Doña Julia, Estepona Golf and, slightly further west, La Duquesa and the Sotogrande courses.

Tee times in spring and autumn book up well in advance — if golf is the main reason for your trip, lock those in before you firm up your dates.

Eating, shopping and the rest of daily life

For everyday shopping there are supermarkets within a few minutes' drive and pharmacies in the nearby commercial areas. For a proper dinner out, most guests end up either at a handful of restaurants in the immediate Casares Costa area or driving to Estepona old town (about 15 minutes), which has a much wider choice and a lovely paseo.

We deliberately don't name specific restaurants in writing — owners and quality change, and we'd rather give you our current honest favourites at check-in than have you trust a list we wrote a year ago.

Day trips, in order of how often guests do them

  • Casares Pueblo — the white village above the coast (separate guide on this site).
  • Estepona old town — flower-lined streets, beachfront paseo, easy parking. The most-repeated outing our guests do.
  • Marbella & Puerto Banús — ~30 minutes east; busier, glossier, good for an evening or for shopping.
  • Gibraltar — ~30 minutes west; full-day trip if you want the Rock, the apes and a passport stamp.
  • Ronda — ~90 minutes inland; the famous bridge and gorge. Worth a full day.
